GRW has provided design and construction administration services for a building to serve as an educational and outreach center for the Berea College Forestry Department.

Silas C. Mason, a pioneer in American forestry and forestry management, was a professor of horticulture and forestry at Berea College. He purchased the first tracts of forest land for Berea in 1898. The forest today consists of 8,000 acres. The approximately 5,000 SF facility will be located in the Berea College forest area adjacent to the trailhead of the Indian Fort Mountain Trails near Berea, KY.

GRW designed several key spaces as part of the project including:

  • Large conference room / classroom
  • Lobby with forest history display area
  • Forester office suite for 3 fulltime forestry staff and 4 part-time student staff
  • A care taker apartment is incorporated into a second story of the building

Sustainable design features include a shed dormer clerestory that provides natural light and ventilation. The building's long walls face south and north to maximize natural light. The project includes geothermal radiant floor heating and cooling, as well as solar hot water.
